It’s difficult reviewing a Legacy game because you have to keep things vague so in this review I’ll discuss Machi Koro (base game) and how the ’Legacy’ version has reinvigorated the franchise.
Machi Koro received multiple awards upon its release, and has received two major expansions. A standalone game based on the same mechanics, Machi Koro Bright Lights, Big City, was released in 2016, and a legacy variant was released in 2019. The Board Room Game Cafe. Sign in or Register.
The aim of Machi Koro is to earn enough income to build all four of your ’Landmark’ buildings, which will put your town firmly on the map. It’s a city-building, dice-chucker with very twee art and it’s suitable for families with pretty young kids. Machi Koro Rules
First of all, games that allow me to build my own city or civilisation are inherently fun to me because I like standing back and admiring the result. Even if you don’t win, you created something, and that’s cool.
Machi Koro is not a strategy-heavy game, the focus is on purchasing building cards that will be activated the most often. At the top of each building card is a number. You trigger the building’s ability when that particular number is rolled on the dice. In the beginning of the base game of Machi Koro you can only roll one dice, but later you can build a Landmark card that will let you roll two. Upgrading to two dice effects the probability of certain numbers being rolled, potentially rendering some of your building cards obsolete. By the same token, it means you can now trigger buildings that activate on a seven-twelve roll.
My son was geed-up right from the moment he was asked to name his town.
The best buildings to invest in long-term are ones that trigger their effects on a roll of six-eight because they will be the most commonly rolled numbers. However, timing is important and you don’t want to be making little income at all while everyone else is limited to rolling only one dice. Not only that, but building cards that trigger on a six-eight often have weaker abilities than the cards with less commonly rolled numbers, which feels a lot like gambling.
The abilities on the cards in the base game are all about gaining income, whether from the bank or other players. The cards are colour-coded; blue cards activate whenever that number is rolled regardless of who rolled the dice, green cards activate only when you roll the dice and red cards activate when someone else rolls the number. This sounds confusing but colour-coding with bright colours is a lot easier for the young humans at the table to understand what will trigger and when. I am not so sure it would be clear enough for colourblind people though, which is a concern.Machi Koro Legacy Visitor Die
The market of cards available in game one. This will change significantly over the course of the campaign.
That’s really it in terms of gameplay for Machi Koro; roll dice, make money, spend money. There’s not a lot of depth to it, which is fine for a family game and it was one of the first games I played with my son (six years old at the time) that he truly understood and enjoyed.
Here is the issue I have with Machi Koro, it runs for far too long. There is a lot of back and forth gaining money then having someone steal it, only to steal it back from them on your next turn. ’Take-that’ mechanics can feel clever or funny or downright evil in some games but in Machi Koro it has me looking at my watch. In my experience in the hobby, light family games are more of a hit when they pack a punch and have a lot of action in a short space of time. Machi Koro asks that my son stay interested for an hour and a half of throwing some dice, which is just not going to happen.
Enter Machi Koro Legacy..
Game one of the Machi Koro Legacy campaign and I could see the issues I’d had with the base game had been addressed. Various little surprises cut down on the play time and added some serious kick to the excitement of the game. I can’t talk about all of them, mostly it was because you start with more powerful buildings. The take-that cards are also somewhat avoidable (being purposely vague here), so there is less back-and-forth when it comes to stealing other player’s money. You can also throw two dice right from the beginning of the game, without having to build a landmark for it.
All these changes do for Machi Koro what the Prelude expansion did for Terraforming Mars, allowing you to fast-forward to the good bits.
Your town board and starting Landmarks.
There are also the standard legacy elements; opening boxes filled with new components and game-changing rules, carrying certain things over into your next games and scribbling doodles over things! Everything that got added to the game over the course of the campaign made Machi Koro Legacy a lot more complex than it started out being. This is another fantastic part of it. My son might stand a better chance of playing a heavier game now that he has been able to learn all these extra rules.
Caveat time! I would hesitate to recommend Machi Koro Legacy to a group of adults. It’s very cutesy and light. If you’re a fan of Machi Koro already then it’s a different story, you’re guaranteed to like this, but for certain reasons I can’t talk about the game feels targeted to families. Let’s just say there are certain surprises in the game that feel designed to excite the little ones more than the big kids.
The base game of Machi Koro is a ’take it or leave it’ game for me these days but the Legacy version definitely refreshed the franchise. The designers did an excellent job of keeping each game in the campaign exciting with new things being thrown in all the time. You can keep playing the game after the campaign is finished too with your own, unique version of Machi Koro.
I really like what is in the secret boxes. I won’t spoil anything, but my son (who is nine now) found opening these and adding the new.. things to the game so thrilling he couldn’t wait to play again. It’s been a long time since he was asking me to come to the table, it’s usually the other way around. It’s definitely a winner in my book because of how much it captured his imagination and made him want to play more games with us.

Games are rated for how salty (competitive), tasty (replayable) and spicy (original) they are.The Salt
There are opportunities for some take-that in Machi Koro Legacy which can upset the young humans in your life. There are ways to mitigate this though. You can just not buy the mean cards. That being said it’s possible to be forced to take money from someone else, so it’s best to be aware of that from the start. In these certain instances when we played I simply blamed the game and my son felt less picked-on. They’ve really thought about the competitive qualities from a children’s perspective and what they would find fun. The Taste
Machi Koro Legacy is played over a ten-game campaign, after which you can continue to play the completed campaign as a stand-alone game. I imagine that because of the rule tweaks and more interesting gameplay, we may continue to play Legacy over the base game. The Spice
Machi Koro was the first game I had that was about rolling dice and activating cards according to the roll. There are a few of these games around now, Space Base comes to mind, but at the time it felt fresh and I liked that children could compete because unlike most of my games there was a higher amount of luck.
